Shirley Mae Spicer

Shirley Mae Spicer was born in Lincoln Township in her family home on October 30, 1939 to Austin and Virginia Dunkle, the fifth child of seven. She graduated from Farwell High School in 1957. At the age of 18, Shirley began working as a nurse’s aide, a job that she enjoyed until she retired at the age of 72. It was while she was working at Ardis nursing home that she met the love of her life, Donald Jay Spicer. The two were married on July 3, 1964 and together raised 5 children over the 50 years they were together. Shirley was devoted to her family, and her happiest moments in life were those spent with family and friends. Above all, she loved being a mother and grandmother. Shirley had a heart of gold and a kind word for everyone she met. She was selfless and giving, and was well known for having an open door and an offering of “can I get you something to eat?” no matter who walked through the door. She was happiest with a house full of people. In addition to spending time with her family. Shirley also enjoyed reading, baking, knitting, embroidery, and had bowled in a couple’s league with Don for many years. Shirley was always knitting something, and made many, many sweaters, blankets and baby outfits over the years for her loved ones. Shirley was a strong, yet humble woman. In her later years, over the last decade of her life, Shirley experienced several losses, but never lost her sense of humor or positive outlook on life. Even in her last days, she maintained her feisty spirit and loving demeanor. She was called home on June 22, 2020 while surrounded by her children and grandchildren who loved her most, as she wanted it to be. Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Jay Spicer, her son Carl Jay Spicer; her parents Austin and Virginia Dunkle, step-mother Frances Dunkle, and siblings Carolyn Wolfe (Dunkle), Robert (Bob) Dunkle, and Ronald Dunkle. She is survived by her children Donald Floyd (Julia Spicer-Torres) Spicer, Jean (David) Spencer, Kim (Mike) Nutt, and David (Wanda) Spicer; siblings Beverly Wood, Lois Anne Slay, Austin Dunkle Jr., and step-sister Linda Doherty; grandchildren Levi (Lori) Spencer, Nicole Nutt, Helaina Sly, Crystal (Terrence) Reilly, Rocio Spicer-Torres, Kevin Spicer-Torres, and Dante Spicer; great-grandchildren Aidyn Spencer, Cameron Cutsinger, Cory Sly Jr., and Perrin Reilly; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends. Visitation and Services will be held at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. Services will begin Friday, June 26, 2020 at 1 P.M. led by Pastor Jim Young; burial to follow in the Surrey Twp. Cemetery.
