Hugh W. Lewis Jr.

Hugh W. Lewis, Jr, age 77 of Beaverton, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, July 6, 2026. On January 1, 1949, Hugh was born one of nine children to Hugh W. and Donna (Jones) Lewis, Sr. in Midland, MI. Throughout his whole life, Hugh remained a resident of the Central Michigan Area, being a graduate of the Mt. Pleasant High School Class of 1967. Shortly after graduating, Hugh proudly served as a member of the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. At the conclusion of his military service, Hugh returned home and met his soulmate Julie Battle. On August 12, 1972, Hugh and Julie were married in Clare and have enjoyed every bit of the fifty-three years since. For thirty-five plus years, Hugh worked for the Dow Chemical Co. as a chemical process operator before retiring fully in 2003. Hugh was an active member of the Farwell Community of Christ Church and an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed deer hunting at his family deer camp and camping with his family across Northern Michigan. He also greatly enjoyed family card games, raising and working horses in his younger years, and he was a voracious reader, especially his Louis L’Amour westerns. However, anyone that knew Hugh well knew that his family was his greatest love, never missing a game or event of his cherished children or grandchildren. Hugh is survived by his wife Julie Lewis of Beaverton and his six children Lloyd (Shannon) Lewis of Beaverton, Hugh (Darcie) Lewis, III of Farwell, Shane (Denise) Lewis of Mt. Pleasant, Nolan Lewis of Shepherd, Lacey (Justin) Bailey of Farwell, and Jennifer Walton of Roscommon. Other survivors include his legacy of sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, his siblings Brenda Lewis, Marcia (Larry) Haney, Mark (Kathy) Lewis, Kirk (Cathy) Lewis, Craig Lewis, Shawn (Tammie) Lewis, and Megan Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Donna Lewis, Sr., his sister Beth Lewis, and his son-in-law Michael Walton. A funeral service in honor of Hugh will take place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at the Clare Chapel of the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with pastors Mark Dixon and Peter Smith officiating. A time of visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday, July 13th from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Memorial contributions in honor of Hugh may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans.
