Betty G. Metz

Betty G. Metz, age 90 of Clare, passed away peacefully Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Medilodge Assisted Living Center in Clare. On February 28, 1926, Betty was born the daughter of Otto and Grace (Bronson) Witt, on their family farm in DeWitt, MI. Shortly after being united in marriage to Franklin C. Metz, Jr., Betty moved to the Clare area in 1948 with the intention of starting a family. From that time forward, Betty remained in the Clare area and many will remember her smiling face from the Clare Hardware where she was a clerk for 30 years. With her husband Frank, she loved traveling and spending time at the lake with their good friends, the Green and Luke families. After her husband passed in 1988, Betty continued to travel with family and friends, feed the wildlife around her home in White Birch, and donate her time and goods to many area causes. Betty was known as “Grandma Betty” to all of her daughter-in-law’s nieces and nephews. Betty also loved to knit. Many former Clare students and church family have been warmed by Betty’s handmade hats, scarves, or mittens. Betty is survived by her son Franklin C. (Kelly) Metz, III of Clare; her grandson Frank Metz, IV of Clare; her brother Carl (Dorothy) Witt of DeWitt, MI.; her nieces Diane, Kay, and Madison Witt of DeWitt; her dear friend Dave (Linda) Conley whom she referred to affectionately as “son number two” and their son Clayton of Farwell; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Metz, Jr.; her parents Otto and Grace Witt; her brothers (and close sister-in-laws) Jay (Dorothy – “Dot”), Fred (Rosie), and Clare Witt; and her sisters Kate Fisher and Ann Heller. Visitation and Services for Betty will be held at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home on Monday, October 17, 2016. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. with services led by Pastor Paul Nestor to begin at 1:00 P.M. Burial will take place following services in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare.
