Marilyn S. Smerdon

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Marilyn Smerdon, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who left us peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones on January 25, 2025, at the age of 67. Marilyn was born on March 30, 1957 in Midland, Michigan, to her loving parents, Francis and Louise (Fitch) Smerdon and was a graduate of Meridian High Schools class of 1975. Formerly of Milan, MI, Marilyn spent her retirement closer to family in Farwell. She lived a life filled with her passions, and a love for her family and animals. Marilyn spent her early years in Midland, where her love for horses and the great outdoors blossomed. She was an avid equestrian and a dedicated animal lover, frequently seen caring for her beloved horses and fostering a deep connection with nature. All of her grandchildren have some of their fondest memories with her associated with horses and she was affectionately called, “Grandma Horses” by her girls. In her later years she enjoyed camping with her family near the shores of Lake Michigan. Professionally, Marilyn had a fulfilling career and eventually retired from the Ford Motor Company, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. Despite her busy life, she always made time for her hobbies, including charter fishing trips and games of euchre with friends and family, showcasing her competitive spirit and jovial nature. She was not one to pass an auction or flea market by and never missed an opportunity to snag a bargain. Marilyn is survived by her sons Travis Smerdon of Lima, OH and Jed (Megan) McConnell of Clare, MI. Her cherished grandchildren, Andrew (Bianca), Violet, Eleanor, and Matthew. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she dedicated her time to nurturing their interests and celebrating their achievements. Also remembering her are her sisters Denise (Mike) Rooker of Fairview, Barbara Johnson of Harrison, Christine Thornton of Sanford, and her sister-in-law Paula Smerdon of Midland, as well as numerous nephews and nieces and their families. Marilyn is also survived by the fathers of her sons, Preston (Beth) Dinkle of Geneva, NY and Mark (Diane) McConnell of Clare, MI and her dearest friend Marilyn (Brad) Burkeem of Milan, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Diane Espinoza and Karen Smerdon, and her brother Larry Smerdon. Her unique personality shone brightly in all she did, leaving an indelible mark on those she met. Marilyn never failed to leave an impression on those around her and will be missed as we navigate this life without her physical presence. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that all donations be made in her name to the Dalis to the rescue animal rescue in Alma, MI. (Dalis to the Rescue, 303 Valley Ave, Alma, MI 48801) UPDATE The family of Marilyn Smerdon invites those wishing to express their condolences on her passing to a memorial on March 22, 2025 from 12pm to 2pm located at 7205 N Gilmore Rd, Farwell, MI 48622. Lunch to be provided. Guests will be invited throughout the remainder of the day and evening for a less formal celebration of life.
