Arlene L. Howe

Arlene L. Howe, age 75 of Portland, formerly of Hornell, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Niche Assisted Living Facility of Clare. On February 29, 1948, Arlene was born the daughter of Richard and Virginia (Hollar) Schaumberg in Hornell, N.Y. She was united in marriage to Lewis Howe in 1968, and together they enjoyed thirty-seven years of marriage until the time of Lewis’ passing in 2005. Arlene was a lifelong resident of Hornell, N.Y. before moving to Portland, MI. in 2018 to be closer to her family. She was a graduate of the Hornell High School Class of 1967. During her working years, Arlene served as a nurse’s aide at the Hornell Garden’s Nursing Home, as well as a cashier for their local Walmart, but she took her greatest pride in her role as a homemaker for her family. Arlene enjoyed crocheting and baking (especially her famous raisin bread) and she was an avid collector of antique porcelain dolls and other nicknacks. She had a love for all animals, but those that knew her best, knew her greatest love of all was time spent with her sons and grandchildren. Arlene is survived by her two sons John (Yvette) Howe of Portland, MI. and Paul Howe of East Butler, PA. and her grandchildren Brittney, Kailyn, Logan, Brendan, Tyler, Cheyenne, Alyssa, and Nicholas. Other survivors include her brothers-in-law Donald(Patty)Howe and Leo Luther, sisters-in-law Margaret(David) Kashorck, Rita Smith, and Denise(Robert) Whitney, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Howe, her parents Richard and Virginia Schaumberg, sister in-law Jennifer Luther, her in-laws Jenny and Paul Warriner, and Dan and Ruth King. In keeping with Arlene’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will take place at the Rural Cemetery in Hornell, N.Y., where she will be laid to rest near her family at a date and time yet to be determined.
